We, as Marcel Wanders, during 2017, saw a real shift toward consumers wanting immersive, multisensory experiences. That’s why we crafted our interior designs to be destinations where guests can be transported within a journey of the senses. I think one of the trends you will see in 2018 will be to feature indoor elements outdoors. Instead of just used as accents, you will see entire spaces that incorporate home furniture designs which will be implemented in an outdoor setting, extending the living space.

You will begin to see more pieces that are purposely designed to bring in as much of the indoors outdoors as possible. The trend will be to create seamless spaces in the home.
Additionally, we are definitely going to see smarter features in hospitality and home settings – in regard to the appliances and the lighting. Sustainability is a trend that has been gaining more and more momentum and won’t be stopping anytime soon. I also think we will see calmer muted design palettes and less loud ones.
During the early part of 2018, we will be presenting several items at Salone del Mobile 2018 that challenged us in the most exciting ways. In collaboration with Alessi, we created some very special items which I cannot reveal yet but represent a new area in their product portfolio.
We also created the Venus bathroom collection in collaboration with Laufen. It is a complete set of contemporary, classic bathroom items that set the standard for modern washrooms. A black leather recliner from Moooi will also be presented. It features an innovative mechanical system that allows for multiple resting angles. The Puglia collection, designed for Natuzzi; includes home furniture, textiles, and carpets that reflect the region’s natural elements and rich artisanal history.
Completing the presentation will be the Montgolfier home furniture collection designed in partnership with Roche Bobois and a geisha-inspired outdoor umbrella we designed for Belgian company Symo. All pieces are designed to reflect the power and wonder of creativity and design.

I think we also saw design that did more with less material, furthering the trend of creating sustainable solutions. I think the trends we saw during 2017 had a lot to do with the advancement of technology, which led to more digital and video solutions in hospitality. Over the course of 2017, we had the opportunity to be part of some very special projects.
The interior of the Iberostar Grand Portals Nous in Mallorca was completed in 2017. Our emphasis in this space was craft and tactile design. We reinforced the Mallorquin style and used transparencies and whites to create a flow of openness throughout. We also designed the interior of the Mondrian Doha in Qatar. Taking cues from the Arabian Nights concept, each area of the hotel possesses its own identity, allowing guests to form a collection of stories woven with a main theme that runs throughout.
We designed bespoke items that allowed us to use a wide array of materials and textures. From the giant golden eggs to ornate stained glass to intricate mosaic tiling, we created a holistic, sensory-rich hotel experience.
