World Architecture Festival 2018 | Prominent features of the project

The North / South Line is a project that has been 20 years in the making. The new metro connects the north to the south of Amsterdam, creating a fast route for commuters, tourists and local residents. Benthem Crouwel Architects designed seven new stations for this line – five below and two above ground. No other project that was completed in Amsterdam in 2018 can be compared to the North / South Line when it comes to scale, complexity and impact on the city.

The stations are all unique but also obviously related: they share a visual language and a reserved, efficient and sober architecture. The stations are comfortable, safe and easy to navigate – an extremely valuable and important asset to Amsterdam’s busy infrastructure.

Impressions

We thought it was a well-organized event, although we did not partake in a lot of the programme so our experience was somewhat limited. We found it to be quite commercial, but that is to be expected at a festival like this. It was interesting to get together with so many different people who work in the field of architecture.
