World Architecture Festival 2018 | Criteria

The Roman architect Vitruvius suggested that the principal qualities of well-designed buildings are ‘commodity, firmness and delight’. These criteria remain as sound a basis for judging architecture. Integrity and honesty are always valuable assets for a project. Loyal to its place, time and culture.

Detailing and materials of a building are very important in our age of technology, some solutions may be happily surprising. Flexibility, adaptability, energy use and sustainability are matters of the architectural agenda.

Finally, as Buckminster Fuller indicated, if the result is not beautiful, we may conclude that solutions preferred may be wrong.
